Why an agent with too many permissions is dangerous

An LLM answering a person is contained: it gets a reply wrong, the person corrects it. An agent in production is not. It receives a trigger, executes, acts on your systems. If it has access to CRM, ERP, mailbox and file server “for convenience”, a single problem (a prompt injection inside ticket text, a logic bug, an exposed credential) propagates to everything the agent can touch.

The right question is not “is the agent secure?”. It is “what can the agent do in the worst case?”. And the answer depends on one thing only: how much access you gave it.

Least privilege in practice, for an AI agent

1. A dedicated identity, not a person’s

The agent does not use an employee’s credentials. It has its own service account, with its own revocable permissions. If you want to switch it off tomorrow, you disable one account, you do not ask someone to change a password.

2. Read-only as the default

Most tasks require reading a lot and writing little. CV screening, moderation, data enrichment: these are read plus targeted-write operations. Start from read-only everywhere, and grant write access only where the task requires it, on the exact tables or folders in scope.

3. Tight scope, not elastic

Define exactly which resources the agent operates on. A customer support agent touches the ticket queue and the knowledge base, not the payroll system. A clear scope is not only security: it is also why the agent works, because it does not get lost in data it does not need.

4. Human boundary on irreversible operations

Every agent action is traced: input received, rules applied, output produced, who or what triggered it, whether there was an escalation.
